Project Quilting Season 9, Challenge 6: Scraptastic

Monkey's Naptime
38" x 50"
I create in Schaumburg Illinois
There are 26 unique fabrics used, all from my stash.

This is the 6th and final challenge in Sason 9 of Project Quilting. I've learned a lot, had a ton of fun and been immensely inspired.

Monkey's Naptime started with gathering a bunch of scraps. I have a ton I can use. I decided to use holiday themed fabrics that were already cut up into 2.5 in squares. I had a nice light purple fabric to accompany the holidays. I wanted to do something besides squares, so I chose pinwheels. I liked the idea of doing a lot of chain piecing. So I started quickly.

I found a sashing fabric that would not clash with any holiday pieces, so I cut it up and pieced the rows together horizontally. Then I did each row to each other, with sashing in between. The squares are not perfectly aligned, but I like them.

When I counted up my pinwheels I had 19. I was tired of pinwheels and didn't feel like making anymore, so I had to think creatively. I've wanted to create a monkey out of fabric for awhile now, but never had the opportunity. This was my chance. I've seen other quilts with feet sticking out the bottom, or people sticking out the top. I wanted a monkey to do that.

I started with a white base and the brown circle on top. I checked out cartoon images to see get some feature ideas.

I appliqued the fabric ontop of the base and kept going (brown circle for the head, tan face, brown ears, white eyes, black irises, pink tongue/mouth). I used some thread painting to add a white glint to the inner eyes, the mouth definition the nose, and an outline on the eyes.  Once complete, I added more white fabric around the sides so it would cover the top of the monkeys quilt.

In choosing the binding color, I had a tough time. With a white top third and a medium/dark bottom two thirds, I had a tough decision. I ended up going with what I had a lot of.

I adore this quilt. I am so glad I added the monkey. I want to hug him. I don't know what I'll do with the quilt, but it's a true favorite.

I'm excited by all I was able to create this season. It was my first season and I can't wait for the next.

Thank you Kim, PersimonDreams http://persimondreams.blogspot.ca/p/project-quilting.html?m=1  and Trish for your work and inspiration.

Thank you, fellow Quilters for your beautiful work. Seeing the level of mastery made me competitive and want to do better each and every challenge even though prizes were drawn by raffle.
